A world-class institution

Teaching at the University was given the highest possible award in the last UK Government review. The University’s degree programmes are also recognised by more than 40 professional bodies. The University President Professor Sir Martin Evans FRS, is a Nobel Prize winner for Medicine.

Cardiff University has been producing successful graduates since the first students entered in 1883. The University has changed dramatically in the last 130 years but the commitment to quality education and a rewarding university experience remains.

Cardiff: a student city
Cardiff is Europe’s youngest capital city and was featured as a top travel destination by National Geographic magazine. There are three universities in and around Cardiff, so it has a large and multicultural student community, which is reflected in the wide range of shops and restaurants with food from all over the world. Cardiff has a well-deserved reputation for being safe and friendly, as well as being compact enough to navigate easily on foot. Cardiff is also one of the most affordable cities in the UK to live in, making it an attractive destination for students.

In the heart of the city centre is Cardiff Castle, the origins of which date back more than 2000 years, and nearby is the National Museum Cardiff, which has one of Europe's finest art collections. The newly re-developed Cardiff Bay area is home to the Wales Millennium Centre, which houses the Welsh National Opera and regularly shows internationally touring productions.

Cardiff is a player on the international sporting stage: the Millennium Stadium hosted the first of the London 2012 Olympic sporting events as one of the football venues and cricket fans may have seen the SWALEC cricket stadium stage an Ashes Test match. Cardiff’s football team, Cardiff City FC, is top of the Championship league and their ice-hockey team, the Cardiff Devils, play in the Elite Ice Hockey League, the highest level of ice-hockey in the UK.

Shopping & destinations nearby
The city has one of the largest shopping complexes in the UK, complete with all the major high-street brand names, in addition to its historic network of arcades housing independent shops. It’s simple to get to other major cities and popular tourist destinations like London, Bath and Stratford-upon-Avon from Cardiff, so it’s easy to explore the rest of the UK and low-cost airlines fly from Cardiff International Airport to many European destinations allowing you the opportunity to travel further afield.
